--From the book, "The Earth Shall Weep, A History of Native America" by James Wilson
Christopher Columbus's First Impressions of the New World in 1492 "'So tractable, so peaceable are these people, that I swear to your Majesties (Spain's King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella) there is no better nation of Earth. They love their neighbors as themselves, and their discourse is ever sweet and gentle, and accompanied with a smile, and though it is true that they are naked, yet their manners are decorous and praiseworthy.'
Columbus also pointed out to his royal patrons that 'the Indians had economic potential as well as charm.'
These were the People of Hispaniola (the modern island of Haiti), where the Spaniards first established themselves in 1492, when the population was estimated at between two and four million and possibly as high as eight million. By 1520, 28 years later, the population had fallen to 20,000."
