Bass River Village, South Yarmouth,
Cape Cod:
This dream dwelling on South Street in the Bass River Village of
South Yarmouth was transformed from a tired 1930’s Cape home through
the spirit of creativity and innovation. A stroll away is the raw
and riveting beauty of Nantucket Sound and Bass River.
Joe Butler, the homeowner and a builder, orchestrated this
buzz-creating project that gave the home a smart new look of 21st
century simplicity and sophistication.
“The existing roof of the house was removed and we added the second
floor with two bedrooms, one bath and a gallery sitting area.” said
Butler of Northbay Associates, who has been building new homes and
renovating old homes on the Cape and in Worcester for 25 years .
“The whole house was gutted inside and out, and the first-floor
layout was redesigned.”
Everything is new, from siding to roofing, windows, insulation,
plaster, flooring, kitchen, bathrooms, and the heating and central
air conditioning systems.
Butler has permitted plans for a breezeway from the house to a
two-car garage with a one-bedroom guest suite above.
Highlighting the exterior are decorative fish scale shingles
trimming front and side gable peaks. Arches add lyrical lines along
the front porch. Sunny yellow, textured, wood-image clapboards cloak
the front exterior, providing durability and low-maintenance. Black
louvered shutters lend definition and contrast. Weathered gray cedar
shingles cover the sides and back.
A white, muntined front door opens to the living room of red oak
floors, pastel yellow walls and a brick wood-burning fireplace with
a white-painted traditional mantel. Double, east-facing windows with
a wide display sill and triple west-facing windows bathe the room in
sun-reflected light. All windows and doors are insulated with
muntins between glass panels. Recessed ceiling lights throughout the
home stage light each room.
A passageway from the living room links with the open kitchen and
dining alcove. Pastel yellow walls continue here and throughout the
home for a soothing, uplifting and consistent decor theme. Gleaming
red oak floors and black-green granite countertops add earthy decor
and crisp contrast to the shell white, raised panel cabinets with
pewter knobs. Upscale appliances are burnished stainless steel and
white.
The dining alcove basks in east and south daylight. A traditional
ceiling light with a cream opaque glass shade, scallop detailing and
bronze hardware illuminates its casual chic setting. East-facing,
high-grade and white-trimmed sliding glass doors open to the front
concrete porch edged with arches and illuminated by recessed lights
in white beadboard ceiling.
A north-facing, nine-paned door opens to the backyard’s concrete
terrace, lawns edged with stockade fencing and woodlands beyond. A
south-facing, nine-paned door opens to a side lawn, a brick-edged
gravel driveway and a one-car garage with plans to become a two-car
garage topped with a one-bedroom guest suite. Along the home’s west
side is an outdoor shower enclosed with stockade fencing for
privacy.
Straight from the foyer is a wide staircase with red oak treads to
the second floor. Opening right of the foyer is one of two
first-floor bedrooms. Bright with daylight streaming through north
and east-facing windows, the first bedroom has sand and white tweed
Berber carpeting. The interior door to this room and other bedrooms
and bathrooms is a distinctive arch-paneled and beaded white door
with bronze hardware. All door casings are wide, layered molding
painted white.
A stylish bathroom between the two bedrooms provides door access
from each bedroom as well as a hall off the living room.
Highlighting the bathroom are a white, paneled vanity with a granite
countertop of amber to cream hues and bronze designer faucets with
lever handles. Euro-style light fixtures top a picture-framed wall
mirror. Walls are pastel green and the floor is large-frame
limestone ceramic tiles. A cream fiberglass shower features a
sunflower showerhead.
The larger second bedroom is lined with west and east windows.
Matching Berber carpeting covers the floor, the walls are pastel
yellow and its double closet is concealed by white paneled and
hinged doors.
The second floor encompasses two large bedrooms with high ceilings
and ceiling fans. Between them is a spacious sitting gallery of red
oak floors. A row of three tall windows frame contemplative views
into the woodlands of towering pines. The northeast bedroom includes
two upper wall barn windows, bringing morning light. Carpeting here
and in the southeast bedroom is Berber tweed in cream, sandstone and
blue hues.
The southeast bedroom is bright with light casting through two south
and two east tall windows. This room includes a large, carpeted
walk-in closet with an upscale stack washer and dryer in the
closet’s alcove.
The second floor’s hall bathroom stems from the gallery. Limestone
tile flooring and a white paneled vanity with pewter knobs and a
granite counter in shades of cream are featured. Topping the
picture-framed wall mirror are Euro-style sconces with a burnished
pewter base and three bell-shaped, white opaque glass shades.
Limestone tumbled tiles line walls along the white fiberglass bubble
jet whirlpool bath and shower.
Wide lawns encircle the home and a white colonial fence defines the
front
lawn. Coral-colored impatiens skirt an English lantern and post
alongside the wide and long southside gravel driveway. Ornamental
grasses sway beside the front porch.
Bass River and Nantucket Sound beaches within half a mile are
captivating attractions for beach strolling, basking in the sun,
swimming, watching boats
parade up and down the river, and checking out the fishermen as they
cast for their catch of the day. Outdoor attractions, fine
restaurants and fascinating shops abound in this Mid-Cape region.
Half a mile north from this house of charm is Great Island Bakery,
which offers an array of temptations, from mouthwatering pastries to
pastas.
